Speaking the Right Word at the Right Time

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. (Proverbs 25:11)

The wisest, most mature, and most effective people are those who capture a moment by saying the right thing in the right way. Quite often, their statements seem to come from out of the blue because the tone of voice and the actual words speak a very different message from what most people expect. Instead of returning anger for anger and backing people into a corner, they calmly speak truth and give options. Instead of being annoyed by a boring person and walking away, they engage in deeper conversation. Instead of using a person’s fears to control him or her, they soothe fear by speaking words of hope.

Researchers tell us that communication is largely nonverbal. Only 7 percent of the impact is in actual words. Facial expressions, gestures, and the tone of voice make up the rest. Words can be “fitly spoken” only if we say them with authenticity, really meaning what we say, and letting our faces, hands, and tone of voice carry the message too.

Messages have incredible power. They can build or destroy, instill hope or take it away. Think about the people you will see today. Some of them are hurting, some are angry, and some have lost hope. What would it mean for you to communicate powerful, life-giving messages of faith, hope, and love to those people?

The Most Desirable Employee Benefits

feb17-15-134103537-1200x675

I was reading a great article from Harvard Business Review concerning employee benefits. I thought you might find value in this article also.

In today’s hiring market, a generous benefits package is essential for attracting and retaining top talent. According to Glassdoor’s 2015 Employment Confidence Survey, about 60% of people report that benefits and perks are a major factor in considering whether to accept a job offer. The survey also found that 80% of employees would choose additional benefits over a pay raise. Continue reading “The Most Desirable Employee Benefits”

Can Downloading an App Really Bring You Freedom?

Time freedom means having the time to move deliberately through the world. It means not stressing out and running around like crazy. Having freedom of time lets you slow down and relax, and lets you appreciate life, your environment, people around you and the world in a much deeper way.

What is Time Freedom, Like, Really?

Time freedom is the freedom to decide what you want to do with your time. You know, those 24 hours in a day. Imagine they all belong to you, every day. And no one, especially not your boss, tells you how much time to devote to something. You’re the only one deciding.

9 Things You Need to Let Go of For Success In 2017

2017_happy-new-year

Here we are at the start of a brand new year! Before us is a blank book of 365 pages and everyday we write one page. In the end, how will your story read?  Amna Shamim wrote a great article in Entrepreneur magazine, and I wanted to share it with you.

As an entrepreneur, you are your best friend and your worst enemy. You vacillate between believing in your ability to take on the world, making it better as only you can, and doubting your worth, self-sabotaging through procrastination and unnecessary spending. You can make 2017 your best year yet, but in order to do so, you’ll need to let go of a few nasty habits.

1. Having a sense of entitlement.

Yes, you are a special snowflake with a unique combination of skills and vision, but that doesn’t mean the world owes you anything, especially as an entrepreneur. If you want success, you need to make it happen. You want a new client or your company featured in a great publication, then you’d better start hustling to make it happen.

Merry Christmas from the Cannons

cannonfamilychristmas

Christmas provides a unique opportunity each year for us all to re-focus. Not only are we reminded of the awe-inspiring, world-changing, life-altering gift that is Jesus; but we are also reminded of our need for this Jesus to heal us in our brokenness.

That is indeed why He came, wasn’t it? To bring peace between God and man. This is why the angels declared triumphantly “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:14)

As a new year approaches, I want to challenge us, the church, to impact this world for good! Our country is deeply divided, people are in great need, and more than ever, we need to come alive! We need to be people of prayer, faith, righteousness, and compassion. We need to love God, love each other, and continue to pass our faith to tcannon37_smallres_-jon-debbiehe next generation. Will you commit in 2017 to live more fully for Jesus Christ?

What an exciting year it has been for our family! Tyler married a beautiful bride named
Megan, which added another beautiful daughter to our family. Kristen is in her senior year at the University of Illinois, and had several milestone events with the United States Air Force including a promotion to Staff Sergeant! Debbie and I are also the proud grand-dog-parents of Lily and Duncan!

Every step of the way God has been good!

March of 2017 will complete our 18th year as pastor of Victory Church. I can honestly say the last 18 years has been a privilege, and we are looking forward to years to come. Debbie and I both love you all very much. Your kindness, generosity, and hospitality to us has been a big encouragement. Please continue to pray for us.

This Christmas season, may you be filled with the wonder of Mary, the obedience of Joseph, the joy of the angels, the eagerness of the shepherds, the determination of the Magi, and the peace of the Christ Child. God bless you now and forever.

Merry Christmas!
